What You Can Do Honors Our Night Sky and Supports Our Troops

May 2013
Dear Friends,

What You Can Do spearheaded two campaigns this month - one to protect the natural darkness of the night sky, and one to honor our service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

First up we called upon Dark Ranger Kevin Poe to revisit one of our favorite topics, Protecting the Night Sky.  Kevin outlined the major threats our bodies and our planet face from excess light pollution and shared simple one minute ideas to help combat them.  By the campaign's end, we had 2,100 people vow to become Dark Rangers and agree to join the battle to Protect the Night.

In honor of Memorial Day, we then teamed up with Solider's Angels to honor our fallen service members. We asked our community to visit Soldier's Angels' Facebook page to share messages of gratitude on theirFallen but not Forgotten Memorial Wall.  Through this collaboration, we had over 28,000 people share photos and submit messages of support and thanks.

In addition to these two successful campaigns, What You Can Do has exciting news to report! We've been named the 2012 Accolade Awards' Humanitarian of the Year.  In addition, we received a Gold Remi from Houston WorldFest for Commercials or Public Service Announcements.  Thank you to everyone who made this possible!

Thanks so much,
The On the Leesh Team
What You Can Do's Campaigns to Protect the Night and Honor Our Service Members
Protecting the Night: Our Connection to the Stars
Protecting the Night: Our Connection to the Stars

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and every summer we head outside to perform one of our favorite past times - star gazing. Unfortunately, all of the artificial light that we use, not only makes it harder to see the stars, but has a serious and detrimental impact on our environment and our health. This month, What You Can Do teamed up with the always informative and ever entertaining Dark Ranger Kevin Poe, to learn about the issues we face from excess light pollution.  Sea turtles and migrating birds are two of the species affected by artificial nighttime light, but they're not the only ones. Humans are directly impacted by this issue since it affects our ability to sleep, and sleep is so important for our bodies' restorative functions, keeping our stress down, and helping to curtail future illness.

Does this all seem overwhelming?  Well Kevin not only illuminated the issues we currently face, but he also followed up with simple one minute ways that we can make a difference. If you haven't watched the videos on our YouTube channel, be sure to check them out.  For more information on how you can help fight the issue of light pollution, follow Ranger Poe on Facebook or YouTube.  He regularly posts great facts, anecdotes and and innovative ways to get involved.

Memorial Day is also a time to stop and give thanks to our service members, and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.  For the last two weeks in May, What You Can Do and Soldier's Angels partnered to honor fallen service members and their families.  We encouraged our community to visit Soldier's Angels' Facebook Page.  Under their photo album labeled "Fallen but not Forgotten," people could write messages of thanks, appreciation, support and encouragement.

What You Can Do also encouraged our community to share their thoughts on our Facebook page.  People wrote in their own messages of thanks, shared our photos of appreciation and re-tweeted our messages of gratitude.  The words that were shared were forwarded on as letters to active service members.  We are proud to report that through this collaboration, over 28,000 people came together to offer their gratitude and support to our troops.

Thanks to everyone who got involved in the conversation on Facebook, and be sure to subscribe to us on YouTube.

UP NEXT

This summer, What You Can Do is dedicating June and July to our oceans. We're partnering with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and The Parker Manatee Aquarium at the South Florida Museum to highlight the most pressing issues currently affecting our seas as well as highlighting some inspirational stories of people working in the field.  We'll spend the summer celebrating our oceans and the amazing creatures that live within them.

If you're an artist, we're holding a contest in honor of our oceans in New York City. We're seeking works of art made from recycled plastic that will be featured as part of a show at Bushwick Coffee House, a coffee shop in Brooklyn, NY. The contest will culminate in an event and concert with the Sea Monsters on July 20th.  Write us at info@ontheleesh.com for more information.

Be sure to write in and share your ideas on how to protect our oceans!

Day 16 of 31 - Learn about the Night Sky

Light pollution: it’s what prevents most city-dwellers from enjoying views of the starlit sky. But it also harms wildlife and contributes to global warming. Watch this video to learn how to help protect the night.

Alicia Beats the Heat

Whew! What a week we had huh? I am not one for the heat. I get grouchy, blotchy and tired. In other words, I am no fun to be around. AT ALL. In fact, I don't have much patience for the cold weather either. I have about a 20 degree span of comfortability. Anywhere from about 55 - 75 degrees is my ideal. That's a bit of an exaggeration, but once we hit the triple digits? There will be a reckoning!

With heat reaching 105 degrees in New York and a heat index of 115 degrees, last week I gotta say, my first reaction was annoyance! I know it's summer and therefore Mother Nature has license to make it as hot as she likes wherever she sees fit on this continent of ours. I, however, disagree with the adamant and persistent attack that she enforced on us. I mean, we deal with the snow and the shoveling, we shouldn't have to deal with this kind of heat.

And then...as I went to restaurant after restaurant and their lights dimmed and their air conditioners failed cause of power outages, I got scared. Really scared. What was happening? This heat was not normal. Was this global warming? Eh Gads!

I am a subscriber of Green Energy and use a lot of recycled or green products in my home. I also recycle, reuse and reduce as much as possible, but on a recent vacation, I realized that's not the norm throughout this great country of ours. Even in 2011. And that makes me sad. We all gotta pitch in folks. We gotta help to fight these issues in our own homes first. If we want change to happen, it has to start with us.

If this past week freaked you out at all, or annoyed you in any way - consider watching these videos for some ideas on how to help stop global warming. Or please feel free to share ideas of your own.

All of these big changes start with us, we have to do something about it.
Take Action!

An interview with Alexis Henry, Surfrider Foundation's Communications Manager, Part 2

Part 2 of our interview with Alexis Henry, Surfrider Foundation’s Communication Manager

I can't interview an organization about the ocean without mentioning the Gulf Oil Spill. Are there local Surfrider chapters on the ground? Is there a way that someone can get involved in the cleanup through a local Surfrider chapter? Is there any information that you think people should know about the spill that hasn't been out there?

Regarding our efforts in response to the gulf spill, our primary focus right now is addressing the near shore water quality issue. In addition to seeing massive amounts of oil and tar washing up, the Surfrider Foundation is getting reports of swimmers and bathers going into the water and experiencing moderate to severe eye irritation, nausea and skin rash. Keep in mind this is occurring in areas where no visible oil or tar is present.

The Surfrider Foundation is getting ready to launch a new testing initiative to try and determine if toxins are present in coastal waters throughout the Gulf, and subsequently track those findings and make them available to both the appropriate governmental agencies and the public at large. We see this as tremendously important work in that not only could this be the only way that some communities are able to secure response (re: impacts/losses to tourism, fishing, etc), but will aid future research/response on the effects to offshore ecosystems throughout the gulf.

We are also encouraging everyone to stay updated on the spill and what the Surfrider Foundation is doing by visiting our Not The Answer blog (www.nottheanswer.org) and signing up for our daily news list.

Are there any consistent misconceptions that people have about the health of the ocean's ecosystem?

I think one of the biggest misconceptions people have is that they can only affect the health of the ocean if they live directly near it. We need to change society’s mentality and encourage people to do their part to protect our oceans, no matter where they live, and educate them about watersheds and the water cycle…everything eventually ends up in the ocean.

Is there something that someone can do in their everyday life to contribute to ocean health?

Here are some simple things we can do today to help keep our oceans and coastlines clean and healthy:
• Pick up after your pet. When carried out to sea, pet wastes can spread diseases, which are devastating to seal and sea otter populations.
• Properly dispose of used motor oil. Never dump it in a drain or field. Additionally, if your car leaks oil, fix it! Each year over 16 million gallons of oil run into our oceans from our streets and driveways. Let’s keep that out of the ocean.
• When gardening, cut back on your use of fertilizers. Excess fertilizer that makes it into our oceans can cause harmful plankton blooms or red tides, which harm fish, dolphins and other sea life.
• Don’t forget, pick up your trash and try to recycle all your plastic containers. If we do our part, we can keep our beaches clean.

To learn more about how you can help our oceans, please visit - www.surfrider.org
